What is Spirituality?

Spirituality is increasingly being talked about.  Influencers publicly show their interest in crystal moon baths, cleansing rituals, and shamanic journeys, music has taken a ´woke´ swing, and friends talk of their ´inner´ guidance while sipping their turmeric latte…

Go back 20 years ago and Yoga was really just verging into mainstream… and I mean VERGING.  You were considered unique if you practiced yoga.  Nowadays, of course, things are very different.

In fact, we have tipped the scale so much that we are overwhelmed with information and it has become confusing…  In some respect, spirituality has even become commercialised so what you end up getting is a ´gimmick´ rather than the real deal.

So, what is Spirituality exactly?

Firstly, Spirituality isn’t religion.  Yes, religion encompasses spirituality but you needn’t be religious to identify with your spiritual aspect.

And so this is how I will lead today’s piece; by paying attention to the spiritual aspect within You and Me.  This is at the core of all spiritual teachings; to recognise the divine essence that runs within us all.

In holistic practices, such as Kundalini Yoga and Life Activation, each person is treated as a whole being of Body, Mind, Spirit.  You would have heard of this before but, because of its gimmick vibe, not given it much attention.

The idea of the holistic approach is to balance these three aspects equally. This is how vitality is achieved.

Yet, much of what we see in our society overstimulates the mind. Competition with our neighbour makes us lose touch with our truth and feeds the negative ego, which overstimulates the mind.

Our mind is an important tool, however, when left unchecked it can get away from us.

In an attempt to balance, we know we have to exercise, to use our bodies.  Good!  Our modern culture has taken on fitness well and is well educated in its importance. I have seen firsthand how exercise can change a person’s life!

But then what?

So often people fall back to their regular habits or swing far to the right and become too focused on the body and use exercise as an escape.  It becomes obsessive and shows how unbalanced we become when all parts of us are not equally valued.

The missing ingredient: Spirit!

Spirit is the divine essence that runs within us all. It weaves through all living things.  You can’t touch it like you can your body, and it’s often harder to hear over the top of your mind… but it’s there and with practice, you can gain more and more access to its infinite intelligence.

Some benefits of a healthy spirit include; An improved ability to relax and monitor stress, increased concentration, and focus, increased sensitivity to your senses, an expanded awareness of yourself and your connection to all things.

We can balance the spirit by incorporating a spiritual practice into our life like nature walks, yoga, tai chi, chanting, playing music. And of course all forms of meditation of which there are thousands of variations.

My greatest wish is that we learn Spiritual Practice in the same way we learn to think or exercise.  Wouldn’t it be a different world if we were taught spiritual practice as young people?

Spiritual Practice takes many different forms

If you’re starting out, short but regular efforts are best.  Find a teacher to guide you.  When I first started, I found a meditation center that offered lunchtime meditations in the city, and so I went often.  I then began using YouTube and found Kundalini Yoga.  I then started watching Mystical Teachings and found The Modern Mystery School… I found teachers!  This was key to my success!

My life is an incredible example of how spiritual practice can activate the true joy that lies within.  By cultivating this aspect of yourself, while maintaining my physical and mental self, you too can live a life fully ALIVE and MASTER your life!
